Welcome to permalp.at

A research project simulating the permafrost distribution of Austria

The project permalp.at aims to gather data about permafrost in Austria with modern methods (field geophysics and BTS-measurements) and model Austria’s permafrost distribution. In a first step the Hohe Tauern region is used as investigation area to gather data for the calibration of the model.

Although permafrost can be expected from a height of 2500 m, little is known about the local distribution. First modeling results show that about 1600 km² (1,9% of Austria’s total area) is estimated to be affected by permafrost (see pilot study). In some regions an even higher percentage is estimated (up to 25% in the UpperTauern region).
